Waru Tjapaltjarri

artist thumbnail
Waru Tjapaltjarri lives in Alice Springs, where he continues the ancient tradition of dot painting that connects him to his Pintupi heritage. Born at Papunya in 1985, Waru grew up listening to his grandparents' Dreamtime stories and drawing patterns in the desert sand as a young fella. His dot paintings map the sacred sites and songlines of his country, telling stories that have been passed down for thousands of generations.
"Painting is my way of keeping our stories alive and sharing them with the world," Waru explains. "Every dot I place carries the weight of ancestral responsibility - it's about respecting cultural protocols while making sure our 65,000-year-old traditions don't get lost. Through works like 'Dreaming of the Waterhole,' I'm not just creating art, I'm keeping country and culture connected to the next generation.
