Kira Yirawala is a contemporary Aboriginal artist who brings together her Bundjalung heritage with the energy of urban Australia. Born in Sydney in 1992, Kira discovered her artistic voice while studying at the University of New South Wales, where she began exploring how her Aboriginal identity intersects with city life. Her art journey deepened in 2015 following the loss of her cousin, an artist who had been a major inspiration.
Working between Sydney and Bundjalung country, Kira creates bold contemporary pieces using acrylics and digital tools that reflect the complexity of modern Indigenous experience. "My art is about living in two worlds - the city and country, tradition and contemporary life," she says. Her work connects to her activism in Indigenous rights movements, using art as a powerful tool for social change while showing that Aboriginal culture is vibrant and evolving in contemporary Australia.
